I had a glorious (and gloriously cool – it was 55 degrees!) 6-mile tempo run this morning. While I was kicking my goal time’s ass, I saw the following three things:
- An enormous owl flying right over my head. Eeek! I was running near that big empty field I talked about a few weeks ago, which is probably like an All-You-Can-Eat buffet of mice for my feathered friend.
- A teenager on a bike who couldn’t keep up with me on my feet. He was rounding a corner just as I was approaching it, so we set off in the same direction at exactly the same time. My first thought was that he slowed down to turn, so he’d be passing me any second, but I kept hearing him cranking the pedals behind me. After a bit I didn’t hear him anymore, so I turned to look and he was still there, just really, really far back. That either makes me a superhero or him a total sloth. Based on my 8:24 cool down pace, I’m forced to conclude it’s the latter!
- One of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen. And trust me, I’ve seen plenty of them since I run so early. This morning’s was particularly splendid – a deep red that turned into a blazing orange, then pink. The picture doesn’t do it justice, of course, because they never do, but here is the sunrise over the creek near my house.
I’m off to get cleaning and packing now – we’re leaving for Vegas tomorrow for The Hubs’ first full Iron-distance! I’m not sure how this snuck up on me, but I don’t feel prepared for the trip at all. Thank goodness The Hubs is totally prepared to rock his race! I’ll be back with pics on Monday or Tuesday – have a great weekend!!

I always take sunrise pictures then get home to show them to the family and they so aren’t as cool as they should be. Best of luck to your husband, can’t wait to hear about all the ways he rocks his race! Enjoy the weekend.

My husband got attacked by an owl a few years ago while trail running. Drew blood on his head! He came back very dirty from crawling out of the woods on his stomach while covering himself with a branch. Beware! 🙂
