IronHubs and I went for a gorgeous long-ish ride/short run brick on the American River Bike Trail today. We saw:
14 – Large dogs, including a St. Bernard and several Australian Shepherds.
3 – Small to medium sized dogs, including a Pomeranian who was SOOOOOOO happy to be running with his mama!
0 – Dogs off leash, which is unusual but I was grateful for it.
1 – Unobservant cyclist who made a u-turn in front of us, rode back to his group of cycling buddies and then stopped directly in front of me on the path.
7 – Groups of runners and walkers traveling two or three abreast, forcing us into the oncoming lane to pass.
1 – Group of cyclists who fell into a single file line while we passed them.
5 or 6 – Groups of cyclists who didn’t bother to move out of the way at all while we passed them (can you tell this is a peeve of mine?)
0 – Number of cyclists who passed us.
2 – Pit stops (for IronHubs not me, thankyouverymuch).
1 – Honey Stinger chocolate gel eaten. Yum-O!
1 – 3-year old boy out riding with his mom and dad for miles (we saw him on the way up the hill and on the way back down). Cutest thing EVER.
1 – Large flock of wild turkeys who decided to cross the bike path right as we were riding past them – yikes! Turkeys have huge ungainly bodies and tiny little brains, which is not a good combination.
2 – Rather large rabbits, which I suppose are hares because they had very long ears. Or does that make them jackrabbits? I can never remember.
1 – Deer, eating the leaves on a tree, completely unconcerned with us.
800-1700 – Approximate feet climbed. Once again, our Garmins had a wild discrepancy, even though all the other data (speed, time and distance) was exactly the same.
32.84 – Miles traveled on wheels.
17.0 – Average mph – w00t!
1.18 – Miles traveled on foot after getting off my bike.
Here’s the thing that kills me about IronHubs: I’m busting my (apparently rather substantial) ass, and he’s all, “Oh, hey, I’ll get out my phone and take some pictures.” *whistling cheerfully*
This photo certainly makes it seem like we had the whole bike trail to ourselves, doesn’t it?
You’re such a badass. 🙂 BADASS (not substantial ass)
Honey Stinger chocolate gel?! Hmmmm… if you say it’s good, I’ll trust you, but that seems odd to me. 🙂 (I cannot stop eating the Honey Stinger waffles though.. YUM!)
Ironhubs doesn’t exactly have an IronBladder.
I know what you mean about the dogs on the lead. The only time I’ve ever come off a bike was because a small poodle ran out in front of me. She ended up being a furry little speed bump and I just did some aerial acrobatics without a safety net. Ouch!
I don’t think my avg speed could ever be 17mph on a bike path with as many times as I have to stop or slow down for people. I get so frustrated!
Haha Char!
Sounds like a wonderful ride, despite the rude obstacles. Not sure I’ll ever see 17 mph on a bike…maybe a Vespa…
This is great! People not moving out of the way is a pet peeve of mine too!
LOVE the turkey comment!
I’m just amazed that you could remember all the numbers! What an awesome 32 miles you guys had with entertainment the whole way. It sounds like people just aren’t that respectful on the trails.
I felt like I’d join a whole new club yesterday when I went for my first bike ride. Bikers said good morning to me! I wanted to yell ‘I’m really a runner, don’t know what I’m doing!’ and then I’d say good morning to the runners and a few looked confused.
Perhaps I broke a rule of no fraternizing between ‘kinds’?
Love it! That sounds like a great ride, minus the bikers who wouldn’t move over! That’s a pet peeve of mine too!
That’s funny – you sound like my wife Michael when we run together. Sounds like you guys had a good ride!
I also have a pet peeve who assume they are the important ones, don’t worry about space for others. I may hate this the very worst IN THE GROCERY STORE! Yeah, you’re taking up the whole aisle – MOVE!
I ran 15 today and felt like a rock star. But I did race first. And it was up a mountain (till I turned around.) I am freaking out a little that I will be the slowest person in my duathlon. Actually that is okay. But I am worried I will be way slower than anyone. I timed myself for 15 and it took me much longer than anyone on last year’s results.
Im ready to try the honey stinger chocolate gel., sounds delish. I love that you and iron hubs can train together. Love it!
This sounds like a great way to spend a day!
Substantially awesome! Seriously, it’s all about perspective, and distance. Maybe cyclists should start using air-horns to clear the path ahead. That’s what I think about when “traffic” clutters the path ahead.
Hope you had an awesome Mother’s Day, P!
-L.
I love the countdown by numbers of what you saw. I don’t think I could remember all those details.
I’m so jealous of the bike trail. We have one near us. It’s 2.5 mile long. Seriously 🙂
