First of all
Let me clarify my last post, since I must have sounded like I was heading off into the world to do something foolish, like run a marathon – ha, ha! The thing I most want to harden up is my attitude (well, and my ass, truth be told – Mother Nature seems to think that the little bit of fat I have on my body all belongs on my booty). I always try to have something positive to say, but these last two weeks I have done almost nothing but whine and complain and I am sick of listening to myself. Of course I am going to take care of my injury and proceed with caution. Thank you all so much for your concern and support – it really means a lot to me!!
I {heart} My Doctor
I go to the doctor very rarely, but when I do I feel like I’m hitting the jackpot. Maybe it’s just Kaiser, but all of the doctors I’ve seen in the last few years have been athletes. My kids’ pediatrician is a runner. My Sports Med doc and PT are both triathletes, and my new doctor that I just met yesterday? She’s a marathoner!! I barely had to explain anything to her because she totally got it. After she examined me and asked lots of questions, she ruled out any sort of stress fracture (which was my totally paranoid fear). She referred me right away to Sports Medicine/PT and gave me the green light to keep training. She showed me some more stretches and told me about her marathon experiences. I walked out of her office feeling completely relieved and optimistic. Oh, and more good news? When the nurse took my blood pressure (98/65) and pulse (57 bpm) she commented to me, “Wow, you’re really healthy!”
After seeing the doctor, I did something I’ve been putting off for almost a year, since I turned 40 – I got a mammogram. Kaiser has a walk-in, no waiting, digital mammogram clinic in the same building as my regular doc (who reminded me no fewer than three times during our ten minute visit that I was due to get this done), so in I went, sweating like a pig from the nervousness. My mom had breast cancer ten years ago (and is completely healthy and cancer-free now), so I knew I couldn’t put it off any longer. I don’t know what I was worried about, though, because it was so flippin’ EASY! All the horror stories you hear about the squishing? Not that bad. *whew*
What’s Next?
The Hubs is doing a century ride today, so I’m going to spend some quality time with my training schedule and see what I can do to salvage Long Beach. I should be starting my taper soon, but I really feel like I should get in one more long run – possibly next weekend. So, I’m thinking super easy paced medium long run this weekend to feel things out and then decide from there how far I can go next Sunday. I’m ruling out tempos and speedwork for the time being and I’ve let go of my BQ dreams. Maybe next time. Right now I’ll be excited to cross the finish line with a smile on my face.
Good for you for taking care of yourself. An ounce of prevention….
And so glad it’s not a stress fracture. I had one years ago and I’m always paranoid about them.
So glad you made it to the doc and that you found a good one. I had HORRIBLE grumpy old man-doc tell me once to just quit running if it hurt and he refused to write me a referral to a sports med/PT!!! ASSHOLE! I threw a fit and asked how he could say it would be better for me NOT to exercise and just atrophy and get fat than to work through an injury that I KNEW was curable so I could be fit and healthy. I said I wouldn’t leave until he wrote me the referral (that’s when being stubborn & argumentative turn out to be positive traits!) and then after I got it from this big stinky ass, I wrote a big complaint to the hospital about him. I later found out from the sports med doc (female athlete who was VERY cool) that that particular doc was notorious for being a jerk and was even evil to other doctors and they were trying to get him booted but he had a lot of seniority…
ANyway – sorry. That was almost 10 years ago and I’m still fired up about it. What I’m saying is, I’m SO glad you found a good doc who understands what you’re doing and glad you can keep training. Good luck with the rehab and testing out your legs.I hope it all shakes out.
My first mammo is not too far out…can’t I just be exempt if I don’t really have boobs? Nursing made them totally disappear.
Glad you have such luck with doctors and that you got some good news. Hope you have a good run this weekend!
Hooray for understanding, athletic doctors and good news!
Don’t worry, I’d never, ever, ever get those family stickers. 🙂
Yay for a good doctor’s appointment! Good luck with the remaining time you have for training.
Good on you for having that mammogram!
How lucky you sound in your doctors! Glad no stress fracture for you!
Great news! I’ll be posting about my fab dr. Visit sometime today, but the short version is we’re lucky to have athletic drs.
I’m so jealous your doc is a marathoner. I have tried to find an athletic doctor with no luck. Other docs say don’t run. WRONG ANSWER!
It’s good to get the smash-a-grams so they have a baseline. They aren’t so bad and go pretty quick.
Great News!
Yay for no stress fracture! That’s awesome that you love your doctor and that she “gets” it. I think it’s so important!
Good for you for getting a mammogram! I’m glad the “squishing” wasn’t so bad!
Good, that is awesome you found such an awesome doctor!! AND even better no stress fracture. Way to be smart about the marathon. I ran my last one on an injury and gave up my PR plans and just decided to have fun and run how I felt. It was one of my favorite races, wasn’t the slowest, but not the fastest either. But I loved it. Good luck!
So glad it’s not a stress fracture. How great that your doctore is a marathoner…perfect! Good job getting the mammogram.
That’s great that you got the mammogram – I love your healthy attitude.
I’m glad to hear that you do NOT have a stress fracture (and glad to hear that your mom is cancer free too)! The PT will help your IT. You’ll be back on top in no time, just hang in there!
Great news…you went to the doctor! I am a mammo tech and do tons of mammos a day. I just had my first one in January…like you said, piece of cake:) Way to be proactive about your health!
I want a runner for a doctor!
Good for you for getting your mammogram. I am still putting it off.
Good luck with the rest of your training and that smile!!
